To travel on the island you can use the network of buses that allows you to travel to the most important places on the island. On Sundays there are just a few buses, keep this in mind when planning your trip to the island. When you enter the bus, notify the bus driver about the place where you want to get out so they can say it to you when you arrived at your destination

It is also possible to take a taxi directly to your final destination on the island

When you bring your car to the island you need to make a reservation to assure a place for your car on the ferry

Furthermore, it is possible to explore the island by renting a car, motorcycle or bike. On bike you can experience close contact with the locals on the island

Bring sufficient cash to island because there is only one ATM on the island (Moyogalpa) and this ATM only accepts VISA

The inhabitants of the island are very friendly and will surely help you when you have questions or need directions. Make sure you wave and smile when you encounter them on your way through the island.

Ometepe is one of the safest places in Nicaragua for visitors and inhabitants.

We recommend you to only go for a hike on one of the volcanoes with a guide. Visiting without a guide is illegal and dangerous.
